Scherri-Lee Biggs is crowned Miss Universe Australia 2011 in Melbourne ceremony

CROWD favourite Scherri-Lee Biggs was crowned Miss Universe Australia.

The 20-year-old model and communications student from Perth, W.A. beat a field of 30 in a flamboyant ceremony at the Sofitel Hotel.

The bubbly blonde with a million dollar smile won over the judges and crowd from the get-go.

Asked to discuss the controversy childs beauty pagents the aspiring painter said children should be children.

Biggs said she was still in shock after the ceremony.

"It hasn't hit, I am absolutely shocked but cant wait to represent Australia."

As well as more than $25,000 in prizes the new Miss Universe Australia will earn the right to compete in the Miss Universe World finals to be held in Brazil on Sept 12.

Last nights competition comprised of three categories, swim wear, evening wear and a question and answer session which the panel of seven judges including Naomi Robson, Vince Colosimo and Marie Clare editor Jackie Frank.

Scherri was a "stand-out", Frank said, she was poised and elegant.

Judges were looking for what contest organisers call the whole Aussie package.

We want the girl next door, the fit, sexy and happy Aussie,. Miss Universe Australia national director Deborah Miller said before the announcement.

We need someone who will compete in the International final. This year we are touted to win after doing so well in the past couple of years.

VictoriansSamantha Downie was second runner- up with last years winner Jesinta Campbell saying a record of more than 10,000 women registered for this contest.
